At almost 6:00 a.m. today, the driver of what police describe as a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer struck a 70-year-old male pedestrian who was crossing the street at the corner of Avenue 54 and York Boulevard. The driver was traveling south on Avenue 54, according to the LAPD.

An employee of Five Star gas station on that corner told LA1 News he did not see the crash, but was told by his boss what happened. They both knew the victim in passing but did not know his name. "The guy was a very kind man. He was homeless, very old," the worker said of the victim. "He was a white gentleman who walked around very slowly in a hunch all the time."

Police say the driver "stopped briefly" a short distance from the scene, before fleeing without rendering aid. The victim was transported to Huntington Memorial Medical Center, where he died a short time after his arrival.

Detectives from LAPD Central Traffic Division canvassed the area for witnesses and video footage, ultimately detaining a "person of interest" for questioning whose name has not been released.
